Villa Verde Italy

Ascoli Piceno

Winding streets of gleaming travertine, stately palazzi, and a quiet elegance you find a lot in towns in Le Marche. No buses of tourists, no crowds - as if time has decided to stand still here from time to time.

Piazza del Popolo: the beating heart
We walked into the square and immediately looked at each other: this is one of the most beautiful squares we have ever seen. How crazy, but even on a rainy day it is beautiful because you can see all the buildings reflected in the wet stones. We took a seat on the terrace of Caffè Meletti, this famous café is a must-see, ordered an espresso and an anisetta, and let the life of the city pass by.

Culinary delights: tasting is experiencing

The city is a great place to hang out, with many cafés and cosy restaurants. Italy at its best but without the clichés. We had read about the famous olive all'Ascolana so we definitely had to taste it! Crispy on the outside, soft and savoury on the inside - we couldn't get enough. Our favourite restaurant? Locanda Imperfetta, warm, honest and scrumptious. We stayed there longer than planned. We will definitely return here.

Wandering through time

Each part of the city transports you to a different era. From the majestic Duomo of Sant'Emidio to the ancient Roman bridges over the river Tronto - history is not behind glass here, but under your feet. By simply walking without a final destination, you will come across the most beautiful spots. From courtyard gardens to the catacombs of the Duomo to the library with its beautiful fountains and busts, because you can never get lost in a city without a destination. Go out with your curiosity and discover lost places.

Why we will never forget Ascoli

Ascoli Piceno is not a city you just walk through quickly. It is a place that you have to taste slowly, where you get carried away, where time is in no hurry. We felt like we were discovering something special, something not yet overrun by the many tourists, but accessible and inviting.

Our tip: Are you around here in summer? Then make sure you catch the Giostra della Quintana festival. Medieval splendour, costumes, against the backdrop of a horse race.

Also, throughout the year, with the exception of July and August, there is an antiques market in Ascoli Piceno every third Saturday and Sunday of the month, known as the Mercatino Antiquario. The antique dealers are scattered throughout the city and you can discover some really beautiful gems among them.
